As Director of Engineering, I led engineering and facilities coordination for a newsroom renovation that addressed aging infrastructure and accumulated modernization needs. I balanced renovation requirements with the station’s ongoing operational needs, connecting workspace improvements, technical infrastructure, and production requirements.
Project scope
- Facilities and technical coordination
- Workstations and production infrastructure
- Shared newsroom environment
The work brought together facilities, workstations, cabling, lighting, and production infrastructure within the broader station renovation. The photographs document the progression from the former workspace through construction to the renewed newsroom and central assignment area.
Modernizing decades-old infrastructure.
The newsroom renovation was part of a broader modernization challenge I took on at WESH. Much of the station’s existing equipment and infrastructure was more than 30 years old. The accumulated needs extended across HVAC, chillers and VAV systems, control rooms, satellite uplink and downlink equipment, restrooms, and furnishings. As Director of Engineering, I worked through these legacy conditions while balancing capital improvements with the demands of daily broadcast operations.
The newsroom photographs document one part of that wider effort. Sales-office furniture was also replaced shortly before my departure in September 2026.
Reducing infrastructure risk
WESH’s modernization needs extended beyond the newsroom. Approximately 30-year-old chillers, VAV hardware, and the fire alarm control system presented reliability, maintenance, and lifecycle concerns. I led their replacement to address those risks, improve workplace temperature control, and modernize critical building systems.
Alongside LED lighting conversions in Studio 2, the newsroom, and Sales, these investments supported a more dependable, comfortable, and efficient working environment.
Completed infrastructure improvements
- Replaced the approximately 30-year-old chillers and VAV hardware to address temperature-control problems and provide a more comfortable working environment for station staff.
- Replaced the approximately 30-year-old fire alarm control system as part of the station’s infrastructure modernization.
- Converted fluorescent lighting to LED in Studio 2, the newsroom, and the sales department to modernize the spaces and reduce lighting energy and maintenance costs.
